It´s a long answer...and depends on each individual but.....
I also run in the mornings without eating (only water and coffee) because it teaches the body to burn your fat reserves instead of using the food you just put into your body and also I don´t want to wake up 2 hours before I run so that I can eat breakfast.
It´s a great way to lose fat and stay in shape. The coffee will increase your heart rate and therefore pump extra blood around the system which is also great :-)
As Mattias and His also mentioned...I find it´s more important to re-fuel afterwards to re-stock the muscles and repair the muscle damage with protein.
Before a race, it´s usually better to eat to ensure best performance - so therefore make sure (if you do race) that your body is familar with digesting food before a run but I would always suggest you eat slow release carbs 2 or 3 hours before and fruit upto 1 hour before you run.
Sorry for the long answer (and in english) :-)
