You can find the innards of Stryd online. Bottom line, it is NOT a "sealed" unit (wind models). The "wind" hole at the front, is literally nothing more than a hole in the casing allowing air pressure to reach to the inside of the unit, and where the electronics/PCB are mounted and the actual baro sensor is also mounted (it''s not sitting at the opening of the case).
Now, the way water works, simply put, when you step in a puddle briefly, the air pressure inside the stryd is (somewhat) going to resist water intrusion briefly, largely dependent on angles (if you step in a deep puddle with "toe-up" orientation, you are more likely going to get water in, as the air can simply pop out the "top" in that arrangement)...
The barometer sensor in the stryd, is mounted to the underside of the PCB, in air "above" the bottom of the casing slightly. So a few drops of "clean" water in the unit, aren''t likely to cause many issues (once you step OUT of the puddle, some water is likely going to trickle in through surface tension even if the submerged pressure kept it "out" initially). That''ll splash around and eventually exit and/or evaporate (very slowly) over time, but even if it reaches the sensor port internally (see below), it''ll not harm anything so long as it doesn''t leave any deposits inside the actual sensing unit.
The actual internal baro sensor hole is a tiny (think 0.3mm mechanical pencil-lead diameter or something like that) opening, covering a membrane pressure sensor. All of that is "sealed" electronically, but NOT physically.
So now let''s change from "clean" water, to muddy water, or actual mud.... some of that gets in and starts splashing around as you run (or is forced in under pressure "jamming up" the thing internally completely).... well, now you are pretty much done for as far as the pressure sensor goes. For sure during the activity, possibly permanently. If the tiniest piece of dirt/mud gets lodged into that internal sensor hole, or any of that "muck" doesn''t come out cleanly off the membrane, it''ll never register correctly again. Best case you can flush it heavily with clean water then alcohol or something similar to try and "clean" but the problem is, that teeny internal hole that you can''t see, has the same "pressure resisting" effect... so it doesn''t actually WANT to let water, alcohol, etc into the opening, ESPECIALLY if it''s already clogged with other debris...
So moral of the story, be careful with it. A nice trail run splashing a foot into an ankle-high clearwater stream, you''ll probably be just fine (may throw off measurements for a few minutes if the water "sticks" in the internal sensor due to capillary effects, but it''ll eventually shake loose)... Step shin-deep in a mud puddle though... probably not going to be a good outcome."""""""""
